Martin Luther King Jr. is the go to person that is discussed in school reports about Black History. I have found Dr. King's birthday to be a great starting point for teaching Black History for Preschool, Kindergarten and in the upcoming school years.

If this is your first time teaching your little one it is important that you curated the resources and information you want to teach based on your child’s age and ability to understand related vocabulary and events surrounding the subject you are teaching.

There are 2 books I highly recommend to start the conversation about Martin Luther King Jr., one to tell the story of the husband and father and the other to discuss the impact of his legacy.

My Daddy, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. By Martin Luther King III is a great book to read to your child from the perspective of Martin Luther King Jr.’s son.

Take a look inside the book by watching the video below.

If your child is a bit older or if you are looking for a Black History resource to add to your home library the Heroes in Black History is a great book for historic details with dates and elevated vocabulary.

If your child is in Preschool or Kindergarten have fun sparking a love of learning. As you unpack each accomplishment Dr. King made for equal rights for African Americans make sure to test and see just how much your child is understanding. Have natural conversations around the events that took place and create space for your child to ask questions.

Note what is comprehended in a journa. Study at your child's pace and build on their current interests to create real world connections your child can relate to.

Lastly, remember you don’t have to teach everything all in one day or one month. You determine your goals for teaching Black History.

Literacy has many layers, reading is only one of those layers.

An equally important literacy skill is listening comprehension, which is an equally important skill as reading and is an important foundational skill to help your child master in their journey to developing strong literacy skills. Listening comprehension connects directly with your child's ability to express themselves.

What is Listening Comprehension?!

Listening Comprehension is happening on the backend for your child, your child is processing lots of information right now, from how they understand language, tone, the arrangement of how sentences are structured, and in what order words go in speech.

Get resources to actively practice this skill.
